Kuntze, based mainly on the small number of regenerating individual. However, there are no works on natural
regeneration dynamics. The objective of this work was to study regeneration dynmics of plants in a conserved-
natural population of A. angustifolia under a developed forest. In a permanent 5.1 ha-plot was installed
in the Forest Genetic Reserve of Caçador, state of Santa Catarina. It was evaluated in three consecutive years
the regenerating individuals (< 5m tall) and it was discussed the probable factors responsible for found structure.
The spatial pattern was analyzed with the Ripley’s K Function. It was found variation in the number of ingressing
individuals among the evaluated years, as well as for the dead individuals. The critical stage of regeneration
of this species appeared in the first years of development 0.5 m of height. Aggregation was predominant
in the ingressing individuals and in natural regeneration as a whole. But, because A. angustifolia is a long-
lived species, it can keep a low number of regenerating individuals in the population and even though succeed
in regeneration.

A atividade microbiana diurna, medida
animal/6.400 m²) e T3 (Controle – Sem animais).
Because of the importance of meteorological variables in different processes that occur in the
soil, the objective of this work was to evaluate the kinetics of carbon dioxide evolution (microbial activity)
associated with the meteorological elements in areas in caatinga in the semiarid conditions of Paraiba. The
experiment was set in the field, in the Bacia Escola/CCA/UFPB, municipality of São João do Cariri - PB.
The daytime microbial activity, measured by the release of CO2, was evaluated monthly from January to December
2008, in three adjacent areas of Caatinga corresponding to the treatments: T1 (10 animals - 1 animal/3,200 m²),
T 2 (5 animals - 1 animal/6,400 m 2) and T 3 (control - no animals). The total area of the experiment was
9.6 ha and for each treatment it was used an area of 3.2 ha. Six points of collection (set at random)were
selected from each treatment. The treatments were distributed in completely randomized block design arranged
in sub-divided plots (3×12×6), and 3 stocking rates (Plot), 12 periods of evaluation (sub-plots) and 6 hours
of evaluation (sub-subplots) and 3 blocks. The methodology was based on the principle that the CO2 released
by an area of soil is absorbed by a solution of 0.5 N KOH and determined titrimetricallyc with HCl 0.1 N.
The evolution of CO2 varied throughout the day in function of weather factors, mainly temperature. The rate
of CO2 tended to release more in the afternoon. Due to the importance of soil and air temperatures in many
processes that occur in soil, more studies are needed in the semiarid region of Brazil.

do rio Paraíba do Sul.
do rio Barra Mansa, RJ (22°32’40’’ 22°40’60’’S e 44°12’ 44°06’20’’W).
A conjunção
ambiental.; The identification of preferential habitats of species which spontaneously colonize disturbed
areas can constitute elements to improve ecological restoration techniques. Therefore, Clidemia urceolata
DC stands out for colonizing those environments and presenting wide distribution in the watershed of Paraíba
do Sul River. The objective of this study was to evaluate ecological preferences of C. urceolata in the watershed
of Barra Mansa River, RJ (22°32’40’’ 22°40’60’’S and 44°12’ 44°06’20’’W). The species nuclei were delimited
and classified according to the following environmental factors: terrain feature, relative position on toposequence,
exposition face, slope and altitude. It was sampled 26 nuclei, totalizing 0.005 ha from 6.839 ha of total
area. Species distribution was more frequent on the following conditions: a) medium and inferior thirds of
the toposequence. b) concave face of the terrains. c) southeastern, southern and southwestern exposure faces.
d) slope between 8 and 45%. e) altitudes between 432 and 525 m, being the four last factors the most determinant.
The conjunction of this information ploted for the watershed of Barra Mansa River indicate that 30% of area
present more favorable conditions for the establishment of C. urceolata, what can demonstrate an environmental
restoration potential.

colubrina, Arecaceae sp., Baccharis dracunculifolia, B. melastomaefolia, Coffea spp., Emilia sagittata, Eugenia
uniflora, Mikania cordifolia, M. hirsutissima, Myrcia fallax, Psidium guajava, Vernonia condensata, V. diffusa,
A. mellifera e confirmaram o potencial polinífero da região estudada, durante o período de entressafra do mel.; The objective of this work was to study flora of polliniferous importance for Apis mellifera (L.) in
the region of Viçosa-MG, during the period between honey harvests from August to December, 2005. The experiment
was carried out in two different apiaries, each one with five beehives. The pellets retained in the pollen collectors
in the beehives were analyzed with respect to their botanical origin. The flowering plants surrounding the apiaries
were collected and identified. Most plants of polliniferous importance for the bees in the Viçosa region were native,
located in gardens and with arboreal habitus. The palynological analysis showed that species such as Anadenanthera
colubrina, Arecaceae sp., Baccharis dracunculifolia, B. melastomaefolia, Coffea spp., Emilia sagittata, Eugenia
uniflora, Mikania cordifolia, M. hirsutissima, Myrcia fallax, Psidium guajava, Vernonia condensata, V. diffusa,
V. lanuginose and V. mariana are potential polliniferous resources to be used during the period between honey
harvests. The results indicate the importance of plants located in open areas for pollen scavenging by A. mellifera,
confirming the polliniferous potential of the studied area during the period between honey harvests.
