Origem dos compostos hidrofóbicos e seus efeitos em florestas de Pinus e Eucalyptus; Origin of hydrophobic compounds and their effects in Pinus and Eucalyptus forests
Vogelmann, Eduardo Saldanha; Prevedello, Juliana; Reichert, José Miguel
This is associated with the coating of soil particles by hydrophobic organic substances and currently there are numerous reports of water repellency in forest areas of Eucalyptus and Pinus. Thus, this study aims at reviewing and listing the aspects related to the origin of hydrophobic compounds and the effects of the water dynamics in the forest environment, as well as implications in growth and development of trees in Eucalyptus and Pinus forests. It is recognized that the local vegetation and some bacteria and fungi, depending on their chemical composition, may release hydrophobic organic substances. Another risk factor is the occurrence of burnings which induce changes in organic compounds and promote soil drying. Furthermore, the particle size distribution and the soil pH may be indirectly associated with the occurrence of soil water repellency. The occurrence of hydrophobicity requires special attention regarding the soil use and management, because this repellency affects the water movement on the surface and inside the soil profile. Changes in sorptivity, reduction in water infiltration, increase in runoff and occurrence of preferential flow are the main hydrological effects of this phenomenon. Due to their lower infiltration rates there is increased the surface flow and reducing the amount of water available, increasing the erosion and, consequently affecting the growth and development of plants.

Soriano, Balbina Maria Araújo; Daniel, Omar; Santos, Sandra Aparecida
The objective of this work was to compare the indices of fire risk from hotspots and define the most efficient for the conditions of South Pantanal of Mato Grosso, based on meteorological data and number of hotspots. The work consisted of correlation analysis between some meteorological variables and the occurrence of hotspots as well as the comparison between the fire risk indices of Angstron (B), Logarithmic index of Telicyn (I), Nesterov Index (G), Monte Alegre Index (FMA) and Modified Monte Alegre Index (FMA + ). Meteorological data were collected at 14 hours in the Nhumirim climatological station and hotspots during night of the NOAA12 and NOAA15 from 1999 to 2008. The wind speed and relative humidity were the meteorological variables which best correlated with the occurrence of fire. To detect any degree of fire risk, the FMA, the G and FMA + were the most efficient indices. For the detection of degrees of fire risk classes very high and high, the G was the most efficient, followed by the FMA. Considering the high probability of success in detecting fire risks in any degree and also in the class of the most high risk, the FMA can be deemed more appropriate for estimating the fire risk for Nhecolândia sub-region.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the Dense Humid Forest is reduced to less than 5% of its original cover. However, it still has the highest richness of palms in this state, which constitute an important and economically relevant group. Environmental and demographic aspects of plant populations in forest fragments are of great importance for their management and conservation. We conducted a study on the spatial distribution and age structure of five palm species in a forest fragment at the municipality of Três Cachoeiras, in the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul. We delimited 25 10×10 m plots and counted the number of individuals in the stages of seedling, juvenile and adult for each palm species. Aggregation Indices were calculated with software SADIEShell. We performed variation partitioning analyses among species distribution and environmental variables canopy openness and soil moisture. A total of 1,443 plants were counted and the most abundant species was Euterpe edulis. The average density was of 57.72 ind. 100 m -2 . Three species showed a pattern of “inverse J”, which indicated that they have a potential for regenerating in that palm community. The predominant spatial pattern was aggregated (Ia>1) and canopy openness did not influence species abundances. Only the distribution of Bactris setosa and Geonoma gamiova, both understory species, was explained by soil moisture, suggesting that other abiotic or biotic factors may be influencing the spatial arrangement of the canopy species.; No Rio Grande do Sul, a Floresta Ombrófila Densa está reduzida a menos de 5% da sua área original, porém, apresenta a maior riqueza de palmeiras do estado, que constituem um grupo importante e economicamente relevante.

Apesar da diversidade pedológica das áreas ecotonais, os solos encontrados guardam semelhanças com os solos das Campinaranas.; “Campinaranas” are sandy ecosystems of great extension in the Brazilian Amazon, and are determinant for the great systems of rivers with black waters. Due to the lack of studies on this ecosystem, the objective of the present work was to study the distribution of “Campinaranas” and their relationship with the predominant soils and geology in the western portion of the Brazilian Amazon. We used geographic data of vegetation, geology and soils, and analytical data of the soil profiles collected by the RADAMBRASIL project, updated and systematized by IBGE, and data from reference profiles collected in the National Park of Viruá, Roraima. In general, the soils of “Campinaranas” are predominantly sandy, developed on parent materials rich in quartz. The overlaying of geological data with areas dominated by “Campinaranas”, reveals the prevalence of recent sedimentary formations (Quaternary), constituted mainly of sandy materials. Based on the studied dataset, we suggest a minimum limit of 55 dag kg -1 of sand in the soils for the occurrence of “Campinaranas”. Soils with higher clay content are present only in Forest-Campinaranas transitions, adjacent to the sandy deposits. It is verified the absolute prevalence of Spodosols and Psamments in “Campinaranas”. Even in different geological formations and under distinct pedogenetic processes, these soils possess similar morphological, chemical and physical properties. In spite of the pedological diversity found in the transitional areas, the soils keep similarities with the soils of “Campinaranas”.
