Identificação de espécies florestais utilizando seleção dinâmica de classificadores no espaço de dessimilaridade
Martins, Jefferson Gustavo
The exploitation of natural resources and their scarcity have led to a rational use of these materials, regardless of their origin and application. Among these resources, wood has attracted great interest, mainly because it is often extracted from native forests and the in uence of these forests on the planet. Commercial transactions involve large amounts of wood and are susceptible to fraud where a wood trader might mix a noble species with cheaper ones, or even try to export wood whose species is endangered. Buyers must certify they are buying the correct material while supervising agencies have to certify that wood has been not extracted irregularly from forests. Identifying a log or a piece of timber outside its natural environment (the forest) is not an easy task. The high number of species, the lack of well-trained specialists, the exhaustive process of recognition and loss of natural features such as leaves, bark and color make it even more di cult to ensure the authenticity of the woods. In this context, this work is focused on building a robust system for classi cation of forest species using the textural features present in wood microscopic images, a representation in the dissimilarity space and multiple classi er systems. To do that, di erent representations for the textural characteristics were tried out. We also attempted to de ne the best values for the parameters used to build the classi ers in the dissimilarity space, which would allow the use of the classi cation models for species not considered during their training. Intending to increase recognition rates, we proposed and evaluated di erent methods to select and/or combine classi ers. In this context, we also evaluate all obtained results at di erent levels de ned by botany, as sometimes it is not necessary to do it at the species classi cation level. We tested the proposed strategies and all methods on a database of images built for the development of this work. Finally, the proposed strategies and methods for dynamic classi er selection have demonstrated theirs e ectiveness and superiority over individual classi ers and the other tested methods.

Dinâmica populacional e ecologia do forrageamento de Acromyrmex Mayr, 1865 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
Nickele, Mariane Aparecida
The tribe Attini (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) comprises 14 ant genera, which are engaged in an obligate mutualism with fungi. Leaf-cutting ants, Atta and Acromyrmex, are considered the most important forest pests in Pinus and Eucalyptus plantations. In southern Brazil, Acromyrmex species are the most common leaf-cutting ants. This study aimed to assess the population dynamics of Acromyrmex species in Pinus taeda plantations and to study the foraging ecology of these species. Agriculture, symbiosis and natural history traits of fungus-farming ants are reviewed, as well as future research directions. Population dynamics of Acromyrmex crassispinus, the most common leaf-cutting ant species in southern Brazil, has been studied over time, in P. taeda plantations. The nest density gradually increased until the planting completed 30 months, and decreased when the forest canopy began to close. The spatial distribution of nests was random and P. taeda plants were not attacked by A. crassispinus throughout the evaluation period. Probably the first nuptial flight of an A. crassispinus colony occurs when it is three years old. The daily foraging activity of A. crassispinus and Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus was studied. These species showed foraging activity all day long and there was significant correlation between ant foraging activity and weather conditions, such that foraging ceased at temperatures below 10-11°C and relative humidity of the air below 40%. Task partitioning during foraging was studied for A. crassispinus and A. subterraneus subterraneus on trails of different lengths. On short trails (1 m), workers frequently transported the fragments directly to the nest, whereas on long trails (more than 10 m) most workers transferred the fragments to other workers. Acromyrmex species accomplish division of labor during foraging and the trail lengths have marked effects in sequential transport. The farther is the resource collected by workers, the higher is the frequency of occurrence of the transport chain. Furthermore, the results of this study provide support to the hypothesis that the behavioral response of transferring fragments in Acromyrmex species would have been selected for because of its positive effect on the information flow between workers. The behavior of A. crassispinus workers was also studied in bifurcations along foraging trails. The higher is the worker flow, the lower is the error rate of workers that returned to the nest with load. Most workers walked in the central part of the foraging trails and these ants occupied a larger area of the foraging trail and bifurcation when the ant flow was high. The results of this research provide information for the optimization of Acromyrmex species control and help in a better understanding of the foraging strategies of these leaf-cutting ants.

Ademais, a modelagem e o mapeamento da variabilidade espacial do volume e da área basal, como apoio aos inventários florestais tradicionais, possibilitaram recomendar práticas silviculturais e de ordenamento, as quais visam maximizar a produção volumétrica e a qualidade estrutural dos povoamentos.; Due to outstanding importance of the global forest sector and its perspective of return on investment in the short and medium term, teak stands in Brazil need information to guide the management of the crop for local conditions. However, the apparent homogeneity of the spatial structure of forest stands is an aspect that, often, makes it difficult to observe the significant variations along forested areas. Thus, basing on geostatistical analysis, homogeneous strata are defined from the first evaluations of the plantations, allowing to indicate interventions directed toward maximizing production, reducing cost of cropping and increase precision of forest inventories. Therefore, this study aimed to apply geostatistical analyses to model and to map spatial variabilities of the production of teak stands in Mato Grosso State. Through a continuous forest inventory with 273 permanent plots allocated in 1,260 ha of teak stands, allowed to apply ordinary kriging and cokriging to estimate the hypsometric relationship in two-year-old stands and in six-year-old stands, after the first selective thinning. Ordinary kriging and cokriging and indicator kriging were also applied to estimate dominant height and mapping site index classes and probability of local productive capacity; and ordinary kriging and cokriging were used to estimate stand volumes at the fifth and eighth years, before the first and second selective thinnings. The evaluation and validation of the analysis were based on the weighted sum of squares of deviations, coefficient of determination and cross-validation, in addition to the absolute and relative average errors, root mean square error, Willmott concordance index and chi-square. The geostatistical analyses identified the spatial correlations between dendrometric variables and, thus, they described and modeled the spatial variability of the hypsometric relationship, of the site productivity and volume of the teak stands for theirs statically precise estimates to make thematic maps. The spatial coestimation between total height and diameter at 1.3 m above the ground enabled, statistically, height estimating and its mapping in the stands. Moreover, by ordinary cokriging applied to dominant and total heights of teak stands, the spatial limits of the site index classes were identified and mapped, while, with the indicator kriging of dominant height, were delimited locals with highest probability of obtaining more productive sites. Furthermore, the modeling and mapping of volume and basal area spatial variabilities, as support for traditional forest inventories, made it possible to recommend silvicultural and management practices, which aim to maximize production volumetric and structural quality of the forest stands.

In this study, carried out in laboratory and in field experimentation, the effects of the following active ingredients were observed and evaluated: Tributyl tin oxide (TBTO), 3-iodo- 2-propynyl butyl carbamate (IPBC), 2-(thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole (TCMTB) and Orthophenylphenol (OFF), being either combined with one another or uncombined, with regard to the prevention of the attack of staining and moulding fungi. From laboratory tests, IPBC, TCMTB and OFF at the concentration levels of 0,25%, 0,125% and 0,0625% were evaluated for performance. Evaluations for TBTO were done at the same concentrations and at progressive dilution up to 0,000061%. They were used either combined two by two and uncombined, to a total of 136 products/chemical combinations, making use of the Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma spp. fungi during the experiment. The products and/or combinations that presented potential in the inhibition of these limgi were selected for fleld experimentation. The results obtained in the laboratory tests indicated that IPBC isolated up to a concentration of 0,0625% was the one that best prevented the action of the Aspergillus niger and up to a concentration of 0,125% the action of the Trichoderma spp. The TBTO, although less effective than IPBC, demonstrated that treatment with solutions at extremely low concentrations, up to 0,000061% of active ingredients, affected the normal development of both fungi, whilst TCMTB and OFF showed signs of being less effective at this stage of the tests. Of the interactions studied, TBTO at 0,125% combined with the IPBC at 0,25% was the one that best controlled the action of the Aspergillus niger, while the TBTO at a concentration of 0,25% combined with OFF at 0,25% presented the best action against the Trichoderma spp. Other combinations of TBTO at lower levels of concentration presented positive effects in the control of the fungi, such as TBTO at 0,000122% combined with IPBC at 0,0625% in the control of the Aspergillus niger, and TBTO at 0,0156% with IPBC at 0,125% on the Trichoderma spp. The fleld experiments indicated that, of the uncombined products, IPBC at 0,125% presented the best performance in the temporary protection of the external and internal layers of just-sawed lumber boards of Pinus taeda, under normal and adverse conditions of lumber drying. Amongst the combinations, TBTO at 0,000061% with IPBC at 0,125% in a relation of 1:2049, respectively, was the one that best protected the boards, extemally and internally, under normal drying conditions, with an approxirnate efficiency equivalent to the PCP-Na+borax (sodio pentachlorophenate plus tetraborate decahydrated) at 0,7%, TBP-Na (sodio tribromophenate) at 5% and a product based on cupper-8 quinolinolate, commercial know as Osmocobre AG 802, at 4%, all three traditionally used in the temporary treatment of lumber. The cost of the above-mentioned solution of TBTO combined with IBPC was practically equivalent to that of the TBP-Na solution at 5%, and superior to the PCP-Na at 0,7% and the Cupper-8 Quinolinolate at 4%. Nevertheless, due to its low toxicity level towards man and animal life and its low environmental impact, in addition to the concentration levels of the active ingredients used, this formula presents excellent potential in the temporary treatment of lumber, in replacement mainly to the chlorinated phenols and its derivative salts.
