Herbivoria foliar de Xylopia sericea St. Hil. (Annonaceae) em sub-bosque de plantio de Eucalipto e de Mata Atlântica

Abstract

A herbivoria é um fator muito importante no estabelecimento de plantas, pois os herbívoros podem controlar o potencial reprodutivo, a sobrevivência e o crescimento destas. Porcentagens de herbivoria por insetos mastigadores foram avaliadas em folhas novas e maduras de indivíduos jovens de Xylopia sericea no sub-bosque de um plantio de eucalipto e em fragmentos adjacentes de Floresta Atlântica de Baixada nos períodos chuvoso e seco. A qualidade nutricional foi avaliada pela determinação da concentração de C e N total das folhas. Os herbívoros encontrados consumindo folhas de Xylopia sericea foram coletados e identificados em nível de família. Indivíduos da mata sofreram, significativamente, maiores danos que os do plantio. Este resultado parece estar relacionado a uma maior diversidade de insetos herbívoros na mata. Apenas folhas novas, tanto no plantio de eucalipto quanto na mata nativa, sofreram influência da sazonalidade, sendo mais marcante no plantio de eucalipto. A idade foliar influenciou na herbivoria somente para os indivíduos do plantio de eucalipto, podendo estar relacionada com características foliares e com a abundância de herbívoros. As análises dos dados das concentrações de C, N e a razão C/N em folhas de X. sericea não apresentaram diferenças significativas na qualidade nutricional entre os estádios foliares. Assim, outros fatores devem estar influenciando os valores de herbivoria observados, tais como, qualidade de habitat e a composição e abundância de herbívoros nas áreas estudadas.

Herbivory is a very important factor in the establishment of plants, as herbivores may control the reproductive potential, survival and growth of plants. Rates of herbivory by chewing insects were evaluated in new and mature leaves of young individuals of Xylopia sericea in the understory of an eucalypt plantation and under an fragment of lowland Atlantic Forest in the rainy and dry seasons. The nutritional content was evaluated by determining the concentration of C and N in the leaves. The herbivores found consuming leaves of Xylopia sericea were collected and identified. Individuals of X. sericea in the forest suffered significantly more damage than individuals in the plantation. This may be related to the greater diversity and abundance of insect herbivores in the forest. Only new leaves, both in the eucalypt plantation and in the forest are under the influence of seasonality. Leaf age influenced the herbivory only in individuals located in the eucalypt plantation, which may be related to leaf traits and the abundance of herbivores specialized on new leaves. The statistical analysis of concentrations of C, N and C / N ratio in leaves of X. sericea showed no significant differences in nutritional quality between new and mature leaves in both sites (eucalypt plantation and forest). Therefore, it seems that the nutritional quality did not influence the rates of herbivory in the study sites. Other factors, such as water content available for herbivory and the composition of herbivores in the study sites, should be influencing the observed values of herbivory.
