dc.description.abstract |
Silvicultural activities in mixed native forests are normally restricted to the extraction of the valuable woods for the wood industry. Therefore, many sampling methods were developed for the quantification of commercial wood. But those methods are not enough for the planification of other silvicultural activities, such as regeneration or tending of the stands. For the utilization of the common parameters of stand description, as the mining quotient, the abundance, dominance and vertical stratification, a greater part of the tree population must be sampled. To achieve that, the lower limit of BHD may be fixed at 5 cm. Also all trees in the working unit must be evaluated. With this intensive evaluation it is possible to practice a sílviculture which attends the dimmics of mixed forests, the seral stadium, the phytosociological association and the interest of the forest owner. Mixed forests, even degraded, have a considerable production potential, but the silviculturist needs much knowledge and hability to recognize the proper actions in each stand. |
